SUBJECT:  U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission extends public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement on Holtec’s CISF

 

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has extended the public comment period for the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Holtec International's proposed Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) for spent nuclear fuel in Lea County, New Mexico, for an additional 60 days.  The new and final deadline for submitting comments is September 22, 2020.  It is the NRC staff’s goal to hold in-person public meetings in New Mexico.  The NRC staff will continue to monitor the public health emergency, and reassess these plans based on local circumstances.

 

Additionally, the NRC staff will be holding webinars on Tuesday, June 23, 2020; and on July 9, 2020, from 5 pm - 9 pm EDT (3 pm – 7 pm MDT) to present the findings of the report and receive comments from the public.  Webinar details for the June 23 meeting are available at: https://www.nrc.gov/pmns/mtg?do=details&Code=20200641.  Webinar details for the July 9 meeting will also be available in the near future at: https://www.nrc.gov/pmns/mtg.
