What You Can Do to Protect Your Drinking Water

Citizen Action has filed a lawsuit against the New Mexico Environment Department for failing to follow its own order to consider excavation of the Mixed Waste Landfill (MWL) at Sandia National Laboratories. The MWL has no liners, is poorly monitored and is leaking radioactive and toxic waste to Albuquerque’s drinking water aquifer.

The MWL is loaded with plutonium, americium, depleted uranium, chemical solvents and heavy metals moving 24 hours a day beneath the dump toward our drinking water. It’s another threat to drinking water along with the Kirtland Air Force Base jet fuel contamination. Lockheed Martin Corp. that runs Sandia Labs won’t clean up the dump unless the Environment Department orders the review for excavation which should have been done four years ago and is being delayed again. The Albuquerque Water Protection Advisory Board says the review is overdue and should be performed now.

1) Ask Attorney General Gary King not to waste taxpayer's money defending the Environment Department against the lawsuit. Instead the Attorney General should act as the people’s attorney and tell the Environment Department to follow its Final Order for review of excavating the MWL.

2). Request that Attorney General Gary King intervene in the lawsuit on behalf of Citizen Action and the public and stop the EnvironmentDepartment from protecting Lockheed Martin Corporation’s pollution of Albuquerque’s aquifer.

Note: AG Gary King is running for Governor.
